Chester market has traded for over 100 years and was located next to the iconic Town Hall building in Northgate Street before moving into the Chester Indoor Market in 1967, with 100 stalls.

Many of the Chester Market traders through the years have passed their businesses on to family members when they have retired, meaning the business’s stay in the family and also their fantastic market stories are passed through the generations and are still heard on the market today. Traders at Chester Market have always prided themselves on their knowledge, experience and loyal customer base, this is something that still rings true to this very day and will continue to do so. The market has been through many changes and evolved with new traders and lines bringing a diverse range of products to whet the appetite of what the customer wants.

Fruit and Veg Chester MarketThere is a brilliant range of products available at the market, from gifts and crafts to antique jewellery, cards, trinkets and wrapping paper, fashion to fancy dress for those special parties! A Baby wear stall which includes hand knitted and crocheted items, Cake decorations, a wide selection of cheese and cold meats, an engraving and key cutting service, Haberdashery, books and a fantastic array of jigsaws. The expert butchers cater for that something special; fresh fruit and vegetables are on offer daily and the market has their very own fishmongers, where customers can choose their catch of the day. Chester Market is introducing an exciting new venture and opening the doors to the university art students and a local artist to decorate the internal walls, engaging a new ambience. The brief is to capture Chester in its glory from iconic buildings and landscapes that engage general interest, to what Chester represents. This will be covered on social media websites “the journey” to attract awareness.

Lego of ChesterAnother exciting item that can be viewed at the market is the ‘LEGO in Chester’ display. The free ‘LEGO in Chester’ exhibition is displayed in the Chester Indoor Market for all to see. The display includes iconic buildings, landscapes and businesses of Chester and what better way to draw attention; to showcase it in LEGO. The owner is passionate about raising awareness about Chester, contributing to the footfall of the market and most importantly, raising funds for the local charity SPACE. Locals, tourists and politicians alike have been privy to the amazing work of LEGO.

The market brings exciting opportunities and events for new traders and customers. By popular demand, the Market has introduced a weekly Antique/ Collectables and Vintage event which takes place every Tuesday within the centre of the market. Casual stalls are available throughout the week Monday – Saturday giving traders the opportunity of flexible trading days – prices range from £5 per day with public liability…

Karen Bates, told MTN,
“At Chester we have a fantastic advertising committee and are continually looking at events to attract new customers and families. The historic Indoor market is looking to extend its welcome to all customers and host coffee mornings, albeit charity events, companionship meetings or social events such as Chester Memories where customers can bring in their memorabilia of Chester seated in the heart of the market.”
“I can remember Chester market as a child; locals alike reminisce about the stalls and shops that have traded since it opened the doors. We are in a competitive world with online shopping and discounted retailers surrounding the city; the most important part of buying is the shopping experience, the interaction, a friendly face and giving the customer what they want. True to Chester market are the traders! Their passion to delight customers by offering something different to the public is wonderful to see and in short, products you’ll be pushed to find on the high street.”
