Woking’s new Covered Market opened on 4th October with the ribbon being cut by the Mayor Tony Branagan accompanied by Councillor Gary Elson and Council leader John Kingsbury. The new covered Market has been built to replace the Open Market on Victoria Way which is due to close for redevelopment in the New Year. The new Market sits in Market Walk – the renamed covered walkway between the Wolsey Place and Peacocks Shopping Centres. It offers pop-up stalls for casual Traders plus 15 lock-up kiosks trading 7-days per week. Traders on the old Open Market have been promised they can remain trading through the Christmas period and Woking’s popular monthly Farmers Market will continue to stand on Jubilee Square at one end of Market Way. The new Market is a key element of ambitious plans to revitalise the Town Centre.

Cllr Kingsbury said:

“Thanks to the Council’s continuing investment we’ve breathed life into a drab and unoccupied part of the town to the benefit of both traders and visitors and above all, Woking.”

The Market was designed by Market Specialists Quarterbridge who also recruited staff and set up the new management company which operates it on behalf of the Council.

Jonathan Owen of Quarterbridge said:
“Demand for kiosks and stalls has been excellent and we’ve opened fully-let. This new Market enables independent businesses to trade in a prime location at modest cost and shows how Markets deliver the variety and footfall lost from so many Town Centres. Mary Portas – please note”.

The new kiosks include two Catering units, a Butcher, Baker and Fishmonger all serviced from a new mezzanine floor which is fitted-out with coldrooms and storage. Quarterbridge can be reached on 01206 761000.
