Leyland Market shortlisted for award

Judges from the Lancashire Tourism Awards were so impressed by Leyland Market, that they have nominated them for a prestigious award.

The market’s friendly stall-holders, excellent food hygiene and dedication to locally-sourced produce, meant that they have been short-listed in the “best retail experience” category.

Councillor Phil Smith, South Ribble Borough Council cabinet member for regeneration and leisure, said: “This is fantastic news for the market and I congratulate each and every trader who has made the market the wonderful, bustling community hub it is today.

“Their dedication in going the extra mile for customers, and for continually coming up with promotions and events to draw in new visitors is commendable. It is that care and attention that makes our market stand out from the crowd. I would encourage everyone to love Leyland and to shop locally.”

The general market, which is held in the market hall, on Northcote Street near Hough Lane, operates Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and has a focus on offering locally-sourced produce, including fruit and vegetables, fish, cakes, and a specialist butcher. Every food stall holds a five-star hygiene rating.

Leyland Market was also commended for its working with the community. Market bosses have joined forces with South Ribble Borough Council to stage the popular Taste of Leyland food festival, in its third year, as well as supporting the Leyland Festival and the Leyland Christmas Festival.

Finalists in each category will now be interviewed by the judges, with the winners announced at a glittering ceremony on Thursday, 9 November at the world-famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
