Leeds love The Teenage Market!

Leeds hosted its first ever Teenage Market recently when 26 enthusiastic young people descended upon Kirkgate Market to set-up their creative businesses in the newly developed Leisure Village. It was a first for the city who have wanted to run a Teenage Market ever since we originally launched in Stockport four years ago.

The aim of launching The Teenage Market in Leeds was finally made possible thanks to a positive collaboration with Hammerson who are currently developing Victoria Gate, a new retail arcade built for the 21st century, next to Kirkgate Market. Hammerson are committed to working in collaboration with the local community and identified setting up a successful Teenage Market as a great way to support local young talent.

The day saw a number of young creative businesses and start-ups run their own stallsag ainst the backdrop of the bustling trading environment of Kirkgate Markets. For many it was their first time selling to the public and every stall made a sale.

The traders at The Teenage Market brought a real vibrancy and colour to Kirkgate Market, with many visitors commenting on how amazing it was to see such unique products being sold by traders of such a young age. Some even suggested about having the Teenage Market traders at Kirkgate Market on a permanent basis!

All in all, the day was a tremendous success for everyone involved. The team at Kirkgate Market did a great job facilitating the event but it wouldn’t have been possible without the drive and determination of James Rogers and Farhana Uddin from Hammerson’s Community Development team. I’m looking forward to seeing many more successful Teenage Market events
delivered in Leeds in the near future.
