Gloucester Green Market

Gloucester Green is a square in central Oxford and adjacent to the site of the city’s bus station. It lies between George Street to the south and Beaumont Street to the north. To the west is Worcester Street and to the east is Gloucester Street. The green was once an open space outside Gloucester College (now Worcester College), after which it was named. From 1783 to 1915 a fair was held on the green, and from 1835 to 1932 it was the site of the city’s cattle market. In 1935, after the cattle market had been moved, the western half of Gloucester Green became the site of the city’s bus station and the eastern half became a car park. In 1987 a major redevelopment of the area began.
The eastern half became a square surrounded by shops, restaurants and residential accommodation. A new, smaller, bus station was built on the site of the old bus station, and an office block was built between the bus station and Worcester Street. An underground car park was also provided. LSD Promotions Ltd in Partnership with Geraud Markets (UK) Ltd took over the operation of Gloucester Green markets from Oxford City Council on 1st October 2013. From day one the new operators provided new state of the art stalls and lighting with a new management style that has been warmly welcomed by the existing traders and has attracted new traders, resulting in a waiting list for stalls on both general market days (Wednesday and Thursday). The first week was a tremendous success with City shoppers voting with their feet, lots of positive and encouraging comments about the new layout and a better selection of stalls, and overall quality of the market in general. The location is a fabulous purpose-built market square in Oxford City centre. Pop-Up canopies are provided (3m x 3m), with counters, back and side sheets and lighting (no other electrical appliances are permitted, the power circuit in Gloucester Green is for lighting only.

The general market day on a Wednesday has a significant focus on food of all kinds. Just over a ton of cardboard alone is generated each Wednesday for recycling from the three fruit and vegetable business’s, each of them have ten stalls each to accommodate the level of stock sold each market day. An eclectic range of hot foods are also on offer, ranging from Thai, Gurka, Hungarian, to paella, dumplings, noodles and curries amongst others. Sweet smells from the numerous busy bread stalls waft across the market, mixing their aromas with stalls selling cheese, olives, pies and cakes. The meat and fresh fish stalls are supplemented by plants, clothing, jewellery, books and fashion accessories to name a few. Wednesdays are wholly dedicated to General Markets, so all traders are welcome and casual traders will be allocated any available space each market morning, however it is advised that you get in touch before turning up on the day as space is very limited.

Managing Director of LSD Promotions, Dermot McGillicuddy, told MTN,
“We were very excited taking on Oxford City Markets at Gloucester Green and we are absolutely delighted that old and newtraders have reacted so positively to the changes we made. We understand that market regeneration can be a worrying time for traders not used to change, but we would like to thank the Oxford traders for their positivity which has paid off as the new look market is the talk of the City and the public have returned to shop in impressive numbers. The future is very bright for this iconic market.”
