Chorley Market to host a play… about Chorley Market

A play inspired by traders and visitors to Chorley Market is to be performed at the market.

Under the Market Roof is written by Becky Prestwich and will be performed by the Junction 8 Theatre on Chorley Market from 11-21 October 2017.

The play focuses on Old Len, who turned up on Chorley Market as a lad with nothing but a couple of suitcases of stock and he’s been there ever since. But Len hasn’t seemed himself lately. His granddaughter Lisa starts to wonder if the ‘L. Shaw’ sign above the cabin could one day be ‘L’ for Lisa. She loves the market and the people at the heart of it, but is her Mum right when she says there’s no future in the market?

Nick Stevenson, Executive Producer commented: “We’ve been working in the arts for a few years now and are really excited to be making work in our home town which is inspired by and made for the local community. The project has been funded by Arts Council England and we are being supported a great deal by Chorley Borough Council.

“This really is a celebration of Chorley Market. A few of the stalls will be open for the show selling food and drink (including the Bob Inn on the market, Lancashire’s smallest pub). As the play has been inspired by interviews with the people who work and shop on the market, it covers a lot of relevant issues such as the future of the market within the town.”
