Ashton Market has proved it’s still the best of British after being voted Britain’s Favourite Market for the second year running. More than 100,000 public votes were cast in the keenly contested ballot, run by the national Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), as shoppers clicked online to vote for their preferred markets. And once again the much-loved Ashton Market – which has also won ‘Britain’s Greenest Market’ and ‘Market Team of the Year’ accolades – came out tops.

The beautifully renovated market hall is celebrated for retaining its historic charm as well as being ahead of the game for moving with the times. It has free wi-fi and a food court seating area to increase its appeal for business and social meetings. Ashton Market also promotes the ‘Love Your local Market’ campaign helping boost and have a positive impact on the local economy; it uses social media to keep in touch with shoppers and traders with daily updates, competitions and news; it tackles environmental issues while also reducing waste to landfill by over 1000 litres a day.

Tameside Council Deputy Executive Leader Cllr John Taylor, who is responsible for markets, said:
“This is fantastic news and we have been told it is history in the making for one market to be voted Britain’s favourite two consecutive years. It is a testament to the many loyal customers but also the continued drive of traders and staff to make the market a modern, forward-looking and appealing focal point in the borough, attracting new shoppers all the time. Thanks to everyone who voted and massive congratulations to everyone involved in making Ashton Market the very special place it is.”
