3 ways to make sure you get a consistent hygiene inspection – whichever borough you’re trading in

Ever noticed how environmental health officers within different local authority borders can conduct inspections in different ways? It’s a strange fact that goes hand in hand with being a mobile trader, and unfortunately it means that you could end up with a bit of an “up and down” hygiene score, depending on where you are inspected. The good news is that there are a few clever and simple ways to make sure your business undergoes the hygiene inspections it deserves. Here are 3 of them:

NCASS image 11. Join the Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS)
Did you know that NCASS members are entitled to a Primary Authority hygiene inspection every time a food safety officer visits them? NCASS has its own Primary Authority inspection plan which food safety officers are obliged to work to whenever they inspect NCASS members. For you, that means a consistent inspection and a consistent hygiene rating score, wherever you’re trading. And it’s only available for NCASS members.

2. Get your essential documents uploaded to NCASS Connect
Once you’re an NCASS member, you’ll have the option to upload your essential documentation to an online control panel. We’re talking things like your risk assessments, your health and safety policies, your insurance documents and even your current hygiene rating. 2Whenever an event or market organiser shortlists you to trade at their event or market, you’ll be able to pass your documents onto their local environmental health team through NCASS Connect. Then, food safety officers will be able to assess your documents and confirm whether you need further inspection at that particular event. You’ll likely see a reduction in the number of inspections you undergo. Cool, huh?

3. Use the FHRS Hub to prepare for your next inspection
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme Hub on the NCASS website takes you through everything you need to know to prepare for your next hygiene inspection. Visit www.ncass.org.uk/FHRShub to give yourself the best shot at achieving a level 5 rating score. You’ll find a downloadable copy of the NCASS Inspection Plan there – as well as checklists and information about environmental health visits – to help you prepare rigorously for your next hygiene visit.
